I don’t know why, but a few days ago, late at night, I was thinking about all my “failed” attempts at creating well-crafted cover art.
I was visiting the Final Fantasy Shrine Forums, browsing through all that awesome cover art posted there and I wondered how much time the people over there invest in this creative, time-consuming hobby. Are they as nitpicky as me? Everyone loves his own creations, otherwise we wouldn’t publish it, but for my part it sometimes degenerates a bit. I often spend hours on one single image. I’ve created one cover with thirty-three different font types, only because I wanted to be able to compare them next to each other. To make sure I’m gonna choose the single best one. Sometimes I start off in one direction knowingly that the end result won’t be what I intended to make in the first place. Nonetheless I keep finishing some of those sketches, just because I want to see them for real.
But over the last two years I’ve had some failings as well. All the covers below for some reason or another didn’t pass the quality gate. I won’t go into detail, but each and every one has its flaws which ultimately led me to exclude them from their asociated cover series. Although I have to admit, that while polishing them up during the last days, some of them have grown on me quite a bit.
I guess I’m an obsessed perfectionist and my wife would probably agree with me on that. More than once she had to go to bed alone, because I’d need “only a few more minutes…”
So I’d like to dedicate this entry to her. To make up for all that time.

I really like the John Carter cover. Imagine a sixties trash-sci-fi version of the movie. Nice.

Some nice covers there. I guess the real trick is finding an image that a) fits the movie in question and b) works as an arresting image in its own right and c) works as a CD-sized piece of art. More difficult that it sounds to manage all three at the same time, though!.Did you ever do a cover for The Thin Red Line? Its a great score/album but the official artwork, based on the poster, is a bit lacklustre considering the imagery in the film itself..

You’re absolutely right. Finding the right source image is half the battle. Sometimes I see an image and know the next second what to do with it, and it all clicks automatically.
Speaking of Thin Red Line, that’s the other end. I have indeed created a cover series a few years back, but it’s in low resolution and I can’t find the source images anywhere anymore. I almost can’t find any good image for it, so that probably will be quite a difficult job. But I’m sure I’ll tackle it one day, the score is just brilliant.
