It’s always the same…
Right after I complete a gargantuan project, which keep me busy for weeks and sometimes even months, I feel spent and empty. But not very long. Quite early that feeling begins to shift into something else. Then I often times sit and skim through all my unfinished custom covers series and get all giddy and enthusiastic. Like a starving predator I roam my sprawling list of ongoing projects and look for that one single collection that is most likely fit for an early release.
I guess I just love publishing stuff on this blog right here. It’s a combination of many things, like being finally able to see that giant banner (on which I often times work for many hours) show up on the front page. Or my personal closing ritual in which I choose my personal favourite cover and add it to the soundtrack index (it reminds me of the old HQCovers, which basically was just an index). It’s those little things that feel like a reward for the preceding work.
Terry McCutchen, a dear cover-making fellow of mine, recently came up with a very well-drafted explanation which stuck in my head evers since:
Artists absolutely CREATE for themselves; however, they PUBLISH for an audience.
I didn’t think about that in the past too often, but I guess I equally enjoy publishing covers as I actually enjoy making them. It’s like a drug. I’m addicted to that warm and fuzzy feeling of closure and satisfaction, when I have another entry in the bank. And when I’m finally able to strike another name off of my list.
This 28 Days/Weeks Later custom covers duet was the perfect opportunity to satisfy those hidden desires of mine.
It was a rather small entry on my towering to-do list and I was able to finish it up quite fast, as most of these covers were just updated versions of older design drafts. I’ve started some of these covers several years ago, but never came around to finish them, because I tend to get distracted by new exciting ideas quite easily.

What a fantastic way to elucidate that strange feeling that grabs a hold of most of us in the custom cover art community. At least, for me anyway. Although not to the extent that you have, judging from the passion oozing from this paragraph!

Let me guess, around the time you were working on ‘Sunshine’? I remember discovering all of these John Murphy scores around the same time (in fact, these were amongst the first scores I ever listened too, and greatly influenced my early musical tastes).
Seeing this cover set pop up has really taken me back a decade to when I first got into film music, and listening to ‘Weeks’ again has been quite a nostalgia trip, so I have to thank you for that!
I apologise for not talking about your covers as I know you love feedback but I don’t really have anything to add; they’re all highly effective and professional. I especially love ‘Days’ #2.

Good to see you enjoying this post. It’s been sitting on my shelf for a long time and sometimes I throw a tantrum and try to work off all half-finished projects at once, which ironically leads to even more half-finished projects, because I’m working on all of them simultaneously.
That and I also swing back and forth between current scores that interest me and old classics that I’m eager to tackle, but don’t have all the time to do so. 28 Days/Weeks Later are some of those classics to me.
Even though I don’t consider Weeks to be on par with Days, it’s still a very good score to me. Days however was kind of a revalation to me personally and I still remember that summer 2003 quite vividly. It sparked my love for John Murphy scores which culminated a couple years later with Sunshine, one of my all-time favourite film scores ever.
There’s been talk going on about a 28 Days Later sequel for years now (28 Months Later? or rather 28 Years Later?) and Danny Boyle always is somehow involved in it. If it ever happens, I would love to see John Murphy returning as well.
