One thing about The Lost World: Jurassic Park, which I became aware of only over the years is, that the film owes its dark atmosphere mainly to the score from John Williams. The style of the film, especially the color scheme, may seem a bit rougher than its predecessor, but it’s still a family friendly, highly successful summer blockbuster. It’s mainly thanks to Williams’ new musical motifs and themes, that we see unfold a significantly darker world before our eyes. A lost one, that is. I clearly remember buying the soundtrack CD back then in Summer 1997. The disc by MCA Records…

“Jurassic Park” by John Williams
As with many soundtrack fans in my age, my real, devotedly love for film music started with John Williams’ 1993 masterpiece Jurassic Park. The film reignited the blockbuster torch, that was lighted by Jaws eighteen years earlier. Therefore it was all the more appropriate for John Williams to revisit the style, that skyrocketed his career in the first place. The score to Jurassic Park bursts with lush thematic cues and swashbuckling action pieces. Williams beautifully captured the grandness and excitement, but also the danger of a theme park filled with dinosaurs. It’s definitely one of his finest moments to date…
“Contagion” by Cliff Martinez
Custom covers for Cliff Martinez’ Contagion were an uncertainty for me for a long time. First and foremost, of course, because I really like the score with its vibrant, irresistibly propulsive tone. The razor-sharp, almost clinical-cold sound palette creates a very hopeless, merciless scenario in my head – which I like, oddly enough. But another important point was, that the whole art design of the film appealed to me immediately. The interplay of colours and minimalism struck a nerve with me, especially on the teaser poster, which was used for the original soundtrack artwork (#1). I sat down multiple times and…
“Gravity” by Steven Price
My summer hiatus is over and I’m back with a brand new cover series for Gravity. The film was directed by Alfonso Cuarón, music composed by Steven Price. I have listened to the score already and was pretty impressed at how Price managed to capture the vast emptiness and especially silence of space, but more importantly the tension of being up there. And I’m not exactly talking about the story-related events happening in the movie, but the distressing thought of what it would be like floating around alone in this cold, black and ultimately lethal void. As usual in an…
“John Carter” by Michael Giacchino
John Carter by Michael Giacchino, one of my favourite scores of 2012 and arguably the only part of this Walt Disney Pictures production, that fully lived up to its expectations. Giacchino composed one blast of a score, a full-circle adventure bombast, that leaves you desperately yearning for more. Unfortunately, that may never be, since the film bombed horrendously at the box office. Partially to blame for this mess is the completely bland and uninspired advertising campaign. And also the score album was fobbed off with a boring, conventional cover artwork. So it was time again for custom designers’ duties to…
