A Tribute to Jóhann Jóhannsson

There’s something about the projects Jóhann Jóhannsson has signed on to, the distinctive artworks that he selected for his album releases and of course his approach and methodology to work within the boundaries of music… or the lack thereof. All of these things resonated deeply with me and the sonic world I live in. He kind of became my favourite living composer out there. And then he died. I still remember the morning of February 11th… my birthday, when I woke up to the news of his untimely death. It was kind of devastating then and I still find it…

“Mute” by Clint Mansell

Now that the promo score for Duncan Jones’ Mute has surfaced to the public, I quickly decided to put my current projects on hold and instead dedicate all my efforts to this. After my first listening session I think that’s quite justified, after all, as Clint Mansell has produced a worthy successor to his earlier Duncan Jones collaboration Moon. In my opinion it’s more than evident that this score has been a commited affair for Mansell. Unfortunately, the film wasn’t very successful (just like Alex Garland’s Annihilation it was “dumped” into Netflix’s ever-growing catalogue), which makes an official score release…

“Indiana Jones – The Sonic Adventure Collection” by John Williams

With this set I’m fulfilling the second out of five promises that I’ve teased on social media at new year’s eve. And it’s really great to finally be able to tick this off of my list. Indiana Jones has always been sort of like a holy grail for me and I’ve made a firm commitment to only start working on it, when I felt like having enough inspiration to turn it into something special (at least for me). It finally came in the form of my friend SonicAdventure, who offered me a collaboration for one of his established Deluxe Editions….

“Ready Player One” by Alan Silvestri

After my extensive foray into Stranger Realms I thought I’ve had it with tribute art and spoof covers. But then Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One came along and with it a spontaneous idea quickly formed in my head: What about a custom covers series that puts its focus on famous cover art of old (and not so old) game cartridges? An idea I immediately became hooked on and apparently I wasn’t the only one. Just have a look on RP1’s poster campaign and tell me the character set isn’t supposed to look like Sega Mega Drive covers. It’s quite obvious,…

Lost Covers, Vol. 5

This years entry of our ongoing series “Lost Covers” contains a wide array of different works. Like its predecessors, most covers in here showcase all kinds of failures and *whatcangowrongs* in cover design. But there also are little gemstones like my contract work for Gwenaël Mario Grisi, a rising Belgian composer whose overnight(!) composition Through the Clouds definitely was one of the most beautiful tracks I’ve heard in 2017. Also, Gwenaël has his own IMdb page, so he’s officially my new best friend ;) The overall amount of commissioned covers is unusually high this time. Not royality-based though, only voluntary…
