Some things never change. A sort of mantra that was sitting on top of one of my first websites. And I guess it is just like that. But some things do change and here are six that have changed over time on HQCovers. Making a virtue of necessity Back in the early 2000s, I started making my own soundtrack covers due to the lack of high quality artwork available. This whole thing really was born out of necessity. Over time I’ve more and more started tackling soundtracks that I don’t even have. And by now I mainly do it for…

“The Proposition” by Nick Cave, Warren Ellis
Howdy fellas! In case you’ve wondered why this blog was pretty much on hiatus during the winter months, then I can answer that very easily. Unfortunately Rockstar’s new epic Red Dead Redemption II was (and still is!) eating many nights at the moment, so – apart from some minor commissions – I haven’t really had any time for this cover design business. All I do these days is travelling the vast, picturesque plains of Ambarino or West Elizabeth, not especially looking for but more than often causing a lot of troubles for me and my folks. The long, dragging hours…
“The Road” by Nick Cave, Warren Ellis
Sometimes in an artist’s life you have to admit that there just is no way to top someone else’s design anymore. If something hits the spot in a perfect manner, you don’t have to radically change it, just for the sake of it. You better try to adapt to it. Which is commonly known as “homage” or “tribute”. And that’s what I did here. I wanna start with the wonderfully sad and hopeless, original cover artwork (#1) of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ score for The Road. I love how this soundtrack looks nothing like the film’s dull and boring poster campaign. Which…
“The Girls of Phnom Penh” by Nick Cave, Warren Ellis
The score to this TV documentary was released to the public on Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ sort-of-retrospective White Lunar. I knew I was gonna split the contents of that compilation into separete albums, so I went looking for source material. But how do you make a record cover for a film, that has absolutely no promotion material what so of? No DVD cover, no poster, not even a wallpaper or online banner. Nada! I ended up taking screencaps of the official trailer on YouTube and started playing around with different ideas. Because of the low resolution video, I decided to…
“The English Surgeon” by Nick Cave, Warren Ellis
The English Surgeon is a british documentary film by Geoffrey Smith, scored by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. I got hold of this soundtrack as part of the Cave/Ellis soundtrack sampler White Lunar, which contains highlights from The Proposition, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Road, The English Surgeon and The Girls of Phnom Penh. Of course I had to split up the sampler into it’s own soundtracks and I needed an album artwork for every single on of them. The problem here was, that there was almost no source material available, since this is a…
