Lost Covers, Vol. 3

The unwanted brainchilds, the dispassionate requests, the okay’ish ones I guess and the late comers. Also the lone wolves that’d definitely deserve a single post but somehow didn’t end up in one. They all suffer the same fate: Being dumped into this consolation prize of a blog entry, without the chance of ever being the single featured image on the front page. For the third time now. I should rename this series into The Good, the Bad and the Tragically Misjudged. But Lost Covers rolls off the tongue more elegantly. Though not everything’s lost on these to be honest. This time I’ve included two covers, that rightfully deserve a gallery…

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Deluxe Edition)” by John Williams

A few weeks ago my dear friend SonicAdventure approached me for a really special collaboration project. A Deluxe Edition of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, containing music from both the official soundtrack and the “For Your Consideration” promo album that was published by Disney during the awards season. Sonic did all the audio wizardry (editing, mixing, mastering), while I was free to do anything with my custom cover art. And it was an absolute blast (as John Williams would call it)!, by far the most joyful cover making experience I’ve had (so far). Naturally for this fan-release I revisited my initial custom…

“Star Wars – Target Exclusive Collection” by John Williams

Last december US discount retailer Target sold an exclusive version of John Williams’ The Force Awakens score. And when I was asked to create custom covers in the same style for the rest of the saga, well, I couldn’t say no. But first I had to recreate the Target cover to get rid of that ugly sticker. Also, to prepare a template for the remaining six covers. This request came right in the middle of working on another series, but I figured a little change won’t hurt. It keeps your creative spark on fire. So I was happily changing texts and titles and was already…

“Star Wars – The Deluxe Editions” by John Williams, Michael Giacchino

I have postponed the idea of working on Star Wars custom covers again and again and again… stowed it away deep down in the cryostasis chambers of my HQCovers space station. But not particularly because I didn’t want to work on John Williams’ opus magnum. No, because I was afraid of not being able to do it justice. I’ve put so much effort into this or that covers series, that I sometimes find it hard to raise the bar. But this is Star Wars, the mother and father of all film franchises and fan fiction universes ever, right? It has to be the very best, most fucking awesome custom…

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” by John Williams

October 30st 2012, 9:15 pm I’m lying in my bed with a cold and a headache, staring at my iPhone in pure shock. I’m reading a text message from my pal which says “Disney buys Lucasfilm for $4 billion. New trilogy coming. Episode VII due for 2015.” I have the weirdest feverdreams that night and it takes me a few days to fully realize the impact of that news. What follows are months and months of speculations, discussions, phantasies and dreams. What an amazing time to be a Star Wars fan… October 20th 2015, 8:15 pm I fire up Photoshop and…
