Considering the amount of time I’ve spent on Alien: Covenant‘s predecessor, I’m really as quick as lightning with this week’s custom covers collection. But you gotta be fair, I didn’t even roughly try to spend the same effort or reach the same scope as on Prometheus. And that’s okay, because at this point in time the available source material is nowhere near as good. The official marketing campaign brought us some spine-chillingly (or rather back-burstingly) good posters, yet overall I was a bit disappointed. Even more so when I think about how Ridley Scott in his old age seems to be getting better and better. In the…

If time and circumstances allow, I like to post so-called making-ofs to show off the creation process of a soundtrack cover, but also to give you a peek behind the curtains.
“Kong: Skull Island” by Henry Jackman
For the most part I was pretty underwhelmed by Kong: Skull Island. Instead of being entertained by an adventurous thrill ride I was irritated by a whole lot of problems. The “plot” is an absolute joke. Pacing is all over the place. The characters are your usual stereotypes… and even the monster fights can’t stand a chance against Peter Jackson’s King Kong from 2005. It seems like there’s not much left to like about this film. Certainly not Henry Jackman’s mediocre score. Okay, maybe the atmospheric cinematography by Larry Fong. And a particularly nice typography during the film’s opening and closing credits. But there’s…
“Interstate 60” by Christophe Beck
A small entry for an even smaller film I haven’t ever heard of before. But I was asked to knock out a design for an unofficial promo rip. And since the originally circulated promo artwork features every designer’s mortal sin under the sun, I felt compelled to right what’s wrong. Without much of a saying, here’s an animated GIF of my work stages. I thought about adding this not only for educational purposes, but also to flesh out this poor, derogatory version of a blog post. And to whoever shot the original photo used for this cover: Sorry for not crediting you personally. I…
“High-Rise” by Clint Mansell
Ben Wheatley’s new film High-Rise is a highly stylized, urban dystopia. A parable of greed and class society, at times chockingly funnny, at other times quite thought-provoking. It takes the same line as Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer and couldn’t be any more relevant these days, even though the literary original is over four decades old. It is also a prime example of a music album I was immediately interested in solely based on its eye-catching artwork. Of course that statement was only true until I got to know the man behind it… Clint Mansell. I’ve always been a fan of his music – after all I dedicated my very…
“Alien Isolation” by Christian Henson, Joe Henson, Alexis Smith, Jerry Goldsmith
Why would anyone want to do covers for an apparently nonexistant soundtrack album? Well… First and foremost, because Alien Isolation is just one fucking awesome video game! I don’t play far as much as I used to, but Isolation is so immersive, it managed to keep me glued to the screen until four o’clock in the morning. It’s that gripping and tense! No matter what, the graphics, the sound design or the overall programming, it’s brilliant in every aspect. Another reason may be that there is indeed an inofficial bootleg album floating out there… and thus there may very well be demand…
