“The Master” by Jonny Greenwood, Various Artists

Dedicated to the memory of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman I would like to recognize one of his last, but probably best performances: his role as Lancester Dodd in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, once again scored by Jonny Greenwood. This was all done within one evening. The original artwork (#1) comes with an image of Joaquin Phoenix on its back side. I took that image and slapped on the album credits to receive similar artworks for both lead characters (#2). The next two customs are based on various teaser posters (#3, #4), not much to tell you about. Thanks to ScreenFonts I was…

“The Abyss” by Alan Silvestri

I always have loved the art direction and style of James Cameron’s films and of course their musical counterparts. And The Abyss by Alan Silvestri makes no exception. Varese Sarabande Records carefully recycled the official artwork for their recent release of the Deluxe Edition (#1). I was never a big fan of the sparse score by Silvestri, but I took this opportunity to finish up a few design sketches that were sitting on my shelf for a while now. The first cover I wanna share some thoughts upon is an exact replica of the 1998 Japanese CD Edition by Volcano (#3). I was looking for a…

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” by Howard Shore

Over the last couple months I slowly started working on The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, knowing there would be a rich bouquet of source material I’ll be able to choose from. But the surprising lack thereof made it a lot more difficult to come up with high-quality stuff. In my opinion the official posters lack of devotion and imagination. I can’t explain why Warner made no use of such great locations like “Dol Guldur” or the eponymous desolation of Smaug. So this time I had to grab a little deeper into my box of tricks. Yet, incredibly, I ended…

“Contagion” by Cliff Martinez

Custom covers for Cliff Martinez’ Contagion were an uncertainty for me for a long time. First and foremost, of course, because I really like the score with its vibrant, irresistibly propulsive tone. The razor-sharp, almost clinical-cold sound palette creates a very hopeless, merciless scenario in my head – which I like, oddly enough. But another important point was, that the whole art design of the film appealed to me immediately. The interplay of colours and minimalism struck a nerve with me, especially on the teaser poster, which was used for the original soundtrack artwork (#1). I sat down multiple times and…

“Skyfall” by Thomas Newman

Framed by the two original artworks (#1, #6), here are my custom creations for the Thomas Newman soundtrack Skyfall. I really dig the design route they went with this James Bond movie. It’s almost British understatement. The high-contrast black cover is stylish and cool, just like 007 himself. And the sans serif font they were using for the Skyfall logo is dead on! Together with the film title it forms a crystal clear and very powerful logo treatment. This series was a quick job, all done within a couple hours. I wanted to keep it simple and subtle, just like…
