“Alien³” by Elliot Goldenthal

Alien³ by Elliot Goldenthal might be my favourite Alien score out of them all. It’s just so dark and menacing, it’s a real beast, unleashed by its composer. I think out of all the Alien films, this is the one that benefits the most from its soundtrack. Right from the opening logos (“20th Century Fox Fanfare“) we know we’re in trouble. And by the end (“Adagio“) the whole production difficulties are forgiven and forgotten, blown into space by Goldenthal’s Opus Magnum. My cover series starts out fairly subtle with a carefully altered remake of the original artwork (#1). I re-created the…

“Aliens” by James Horner

There’s a very interesting article on Strange Shapes about what we would’ve gotten, had Ridley Scott directed the Alien II sequel. Long story short, it’s basically Prometheus in a nutshell. And I also predict, we wouldn’t have seen and especially heard James Horner composing a rousing and frenzy score as he did for James Cameron’s Aliens. That would have been a real pity, since it may be my favourite James Horner score of all. And one that most certainly defined my childhood and its nightmares. When I was 10 years old, listening to the vague descriptions from my brother and his friends (“It was…

“Alien” by Jerry Goldsmith

Faithful followers of my blog might remember an already existing entry to Jerry Goldsmith’s Alien. Indeed, I’ve already published custom covers to this soundtrack as one of the very first posts on HQCovers. But I always wanted to revise them some day and finally this day has come. Actually I’d like to take this opportunity to overhaul the whole Alien saga. But first things first, here’s one of the true classics in Sci-Fi cinema and film music history: Alien. H.R. Giger’s space creature serves both as source of many nightmares, as well as an inspiration to many, incredibly creative works…

“Maleficent” by James Newton Howard

I‘m back from my summer hiatus with kind of a surprise. If not for you, then at least for me. Because I didn’t expect to feature James Newton Howard’s Maleficent on my site at all. This one totally came out of the blue. I’ve already heard rumors that it may be the next big thing among film-score-enthusiasts, but I when I gave it a spin for myself, I was downright blown away! Two spins later I was already looking for source images and, just like this score keeps getting better and better, my custom cover series kept growing bigger and bigger. The…

“Snowpiercer” by Marco Beltrami

I‘ve read an interesting interview with Marco Beltrami the other day in which especially one quote of him stood out for me and made me think. On the question, whether he thinks that genre movies and scores would stick out if they were as offbeat as Snowpiercer, Beltrami said the following: Well Im not sure what the “genre” is for “Snowpiercer,” but yes, if every movie was an original idea and was focused on creating something new rather than imitation, than they would stick out! Even if a movie doesn’t completely work (which is not the case here), it is better to strive for…
