When I stumbled upon the Japan Edition of The Rise of Skywalker at some point in 2019, I wondered why the Japanese get these wonderful designs while we, the rest of the world, have to deal with mundane stock artwork?
Clearly there’s gotta be someone who had to deal with that injustice, so why not me? I spent about half an hour to remake The Rise of Skywalker in square format. And then I decided I’d do the same for The Last Jedi, yet with a few subtle differences compared to the official cover art. And because I was already rolling along, I sat down for another hour or so to come up with a fitting custom cover for The Force Awakens as well. It was a bit trickier, as I had to move around quite a lot of elements, especially Finn holding the laser sword and the general area around him.
Once I was done I had a trilogy of square Japanese cover artworks. But Star Wars isn’t just a trilogy anymore, it’s more like a trilogy of trilogies. So I guess I had to extend that design approach to the other, remaining Star Wars scores as well. Even if the posters and key graphics from back then didn’t quite fit in with my self-imposed “Japan Edition” design guidelines. I still had to complete this set, no matter what.
I think the polished Photoshop posters of the sequel trilogy give the specific covers (#1 to #3) a very clean and sleek look which is even further enhanced by the plain choice of font and the sort of empty space in the lower third of the cover. I had to find similarly high-quality premium poster designs for the remaining six covers that looked somewhat realistic, but still had an artistic quality. I searched and I found! Four of the nine covers below (#4, #6, #8, #9) are based on the gorgeous anniversary posters created by Matt Ferguson. His use of colours, fonts and spacing is remarkable. Please check out his website and be awestruck!
Unfortunately, the remaining two covers (#5 and #7) are a little out of place and didn’t fit perfectly into my desired style. But what is started must be finished and so here it is. Another collection of Star Wars custom covers in which I take a certain existing design and extend it to the remaining scores. That’s how it’s always been and how it will continue to be. Certainly not for the last time.

While i will never change my Star Wars covers in my own library, i will always be amazed by what you keep churning out! These super symmetrical ones in particular strike my fancy – mostly for Episodes 1, 3, 5, and 6. Too bad (as you said), the others don’t quite match that style. I guess you’ll just have to make key art by yourself next if Matt won’t make them ;-)
