“Gravity” by Steven Price

My summer hiatus is over and I’m back with a brand new cover series for Gravity. The film was directed by Alfonso Cuarón, music composed by Steven Price. I have listened to the score already and was pretty impressed at how Price managed to capture the vast emptiness and especially silence of space, but more importantly the tension of being up there. And I’m not exactly talking about the story-related events happening in the movie, but the distressing thought of what it would be like floating around alone in this cold, black and ultimately lethal void. As usual in an…

“John Carter” by Michael Giacchino

John Carter by Michael Giacchino, one of my favourite scores of 2012 and arguably the only part of this Walt Disney Pictures production, that fully lived up to its expectations. Giacchino composed one blast of a score, a full-circle adventure bombast, that leaves you desperately yearning for more. Unfortunately, that may never be, since the film bombed horrendously at the box office. Partially to blame for this mess is the completely bland and uninspired advertising campaign. And also the score album was fobbed off with a boring, conventional cover artwork. So it was time again for custom designers’ duties to…

“Skyfall” by Thomas Newman

Framed by the two original artworks (#1, #6), here are my custom creations for the Thomas Newman soundtrack Skyfall. I really dig the design route they went with this James Bond movie. It’s almost British understatement. The high-contrast black cover is stylish and cool, just like 007 himself. And the sans serif font they were using for the Skyfall logo is dead on! Together with the film title it forms a crystal clear and very powerful logo treatment. This series was a quick job, all done within a couple hours. I wanted to keep it simple and subtle, just like…

“I Am Legend” by James Newton Howard

With recently releases The Last of Us and World War Z, I was once again in my annual zombie fever. So I thought, it was the perfect time to make a few covers for one of my all-time favourite James Newton Howard scores: I Am Legend. The 2007 film, directed by Francis Lawrence, wasn’t received that well by critics, but I fell for it immediately. I’m a sucker for apocalypse movies/books/games in general. And the mature approach on such serious topics like loss, lonelyness and guilt was a game-changer for me. Although there’s a huge amount of silence in the…

“World War Z” by Marco Beltrami, Muse

After last week’s The Last of Us I’m pleased to give to you the next entry in my so-called “Summer Zombie Survival Trilogy”. Marco Beltrami’s World War Z. I always enjoy the clear sound and dynamic range in Marco’s scores and this one makes no difference. Next to Chris Young he’s probably my favourite horror genre composer out there. Add to this a pulsating main theme by Muse (which didn’t make the album cut sadly) and you’ll get one of the best and most thrilling scores of the summer. The concept for my main custom cover (#1) was there from…
