“Mad Max: Fury Road” by Tom Holkenborg

Movie-wise the month of May is usually the annual kick-off into Blockbuster season. The time when Hollywood really gets the ball rolling. Last year Godzilla was fueling the hype machine and this year Joss Whedon seems to be demanding the spotlight with his highly anticipated Avengers sequel. And for whatever reason I thought Mad Max: Fury Road might play a big part as well. While that may very well be true for George Miller’s film, I Initially wanted my custom covers entry to be a really big thing as well. But unlike the spectacular teaser trailer, the whole poster campaign left me badly…

“Birdman” by Antonio Sanchez, Various Artists

Congrats to Alejandro González Iñárritu for winning big time at last nights Oscars. He’s definitely among my favourite directors and I salute to his skill and creativity. I love his body of work ever since 21 Grams and it’s about time he gets his well-deserved recognition. The highly unusual drum score for Birdman has been “composed” (or rather improvised) by Jazz drummer Antonio Sanchez and is definitely worth a listen. It’s really fascinating how Sanchez is able to create moods and tensions only with the sounds of a drumset. My first custom (#1) is based on the fantastic one-sheet poster, designed by Mark W. Carroll and photographed…

“Alien Isolation” by Christian Henson, Joe Henson, Alexis Smith, Jerry Goldsmith

Why would anyone want to do covers for an apparently nonexistant soundtrack album? Well… First and foremost, because Alien Isolation is just one fucking awesome video game! I don’t play far as much as I used to, but Isolation is so immersive, it managed to keep me glued to the screen until four o’clock in the morning. It’s that gripping and tense! No matter what, the graphics, the sound design or the overall programming, it’s brilliant in every aspect. Another reason may be that there is indeed an inofficial bootleg album floating out there… and thus there may very well be demand…

“The Book of Eli” by Atticus Ross

After all the success Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had with their past efforts, it’s really interesting to hear only Ross’ side of the coin. To be able to go back to a time before the duo started collaborating on soundtracks. The Book of Eli shows very clearly, that all the elements of his later work were already present, albeit not in the same well-elaborated form. My goal for this cover series was to provide the same quality design for Atticus Ross’ solo work, as I did before for The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl. I wanted to give the soundtrack the feel…

“Nightcrawler” by James Newton Howard

I love the fact that James Newton Howard can write scores like Maleficent and Nightcrawler within the same year. Compare the lush and romantic beauty of the former with the strange yet oddly efficient combination of electronica and woodwinds of the latter and you couldn’t go further apart. This one wasn’t on my to-do list at all, but once the original artwork (#1) popped up on the net, I changed my mind all of a sudden. Who wouldn’t want to have a picture full of awesomeness on his website? This series started off fairly easy with a custom cover based on the official…
