A secret world, future technology, a faceless enemy and a mysterious little pin… these are the ingrediences of Brad Bird’s latest tale of wonders. I’m really looking forward to Tomorrowland, both the movie and the score. But while the titular place has a BioShock Infinite like retro-futuristic vibe, the marketing campaign was severely underwhelming so far. This film holds so much promise, but for an entirely new intellectual property Disney imho failed to create something remarkeble. I dig the pin design to some degree, but I think even this MacGuffin-like prop could look a little more magical. The director himself designed a really wonderful logo (which I…
Category: Mockups
The following posts contain Photoshop mockups, which are scattered all over the place at HQCovers, so I found it necessary to give them their own category.
“Mad Max: Fury Road” by Tom Holkenborg
Movie-wise the month of May is usually the annual kick-off into Blockbuster season. The time when Hollywood really gets the ball rolling. Last year Godzilla was fueling the hype machine and this year Joss Whedon seems to be demanding the spotlight with his highly anticipated Avengers sequel. And for whatever reason I thought Mad Max: Fury Road might play a big part as well. While that may very well be true for George Miller’s film, I Initially wanted my custom covers entry to be a really big thing as well. But unlike the spectacular teaser trailer, the whole poster campaign left me badly…
“Mulan (Deluxe Edition)” by Jerry Goldsmith
So far 2015 had some great collaborations for me in the bag and now there’s one more in the bank. All of these artworks were created for an unofficial fan release of Jerry Goldsmith’s Oscar nominated score to Mulan. To be honest, I’ve never heard the music (or seen the film for that matter) before, but when I was asked to work on this project, I immediately accepted. I have the deepest respect for the person behind this and therefore I felt accordingly high pressure. But I was met with incredible patience and was even encouraged to take the time necessary. It took me almost four weeks to…
“Jupiter Ascending” by Michael Giacchino
Oscar Season! It’s that time of the year again. When Hollywood is collectively blowing its own horn. But because all critics are busy watching the screeners that filesharers are so grateful to share with us all, any film released during January and February automatically falls into that awardless oblivion. And so Oscar chances for all other professions associated with the film are ruined as well. Much to Michael Giacchino’s demise Jupiter Ascending is one of those films. One that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will pretend not to exist by the end of the year (just like they did with…
“Inherent Vice” by Jonny Greenwood, Various Artists
A quick throw-in for Jonny Greenwood’s latest effort. The whole ad campaign for Inherent Vice takes us back to Boogie Nights times and I’m sure every P.T. Anderson fan goes nuts for this film. Overall this 80’s inspired neon style is currently coming back big time. To use this widescreen banner for the custom digipack was self-evidently, I’m only wondering why no-one else did it before me (at least in the custom cover circles I’m hanging around). Not much work was necessary for this cover. I just had to get hold of the proper font types (“Drescher Grotesk” and “HLT RollingPen“) and extended the artwork a little bit…
