When I first saw the teaser poster for Joseph Kosinski’s second feature film Oblivion, I immediately knew I would design custom covers for its soundtrack. There are certain colour palettes and temperatures, that draw my attention every time, I can’t help it. The score was composed by M83’s Anthony Gonzalez and Joseph Trapanese and has a few standout tracks, e.g. “StarWaves”, which reminds me of John Murphy’s Sunshine. Or “Radiaton Zone”, which features a drum battle(!) between Loic Maurin and Ilan Rubin. Great Stuff! The custom covers fill the whole range from dead easy to damn difficult. My first entry (#1)…
Category: Singles/EPs
The following posts contain especially designed custom covers for supplemental singles or EPs, which sometimes serve as a free give-away or a promotion release in advance of a regular soundtrack album.
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” by Howard Shore
My main reason for looking forward to Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit was all the new music composed by Howard Shore. I even was happy about the fact, that suddenly there should be three movies instead of two – meaning that even more music would be composed and released as soundtracks (and probably Complete Recordings) in the wake of the films. Another fun aspect for me of course, was designing custom covers. Looking back at the fun I had with all the The Lord of the Rings soundtracks and it’s various covers, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the…
“Dead Island” by Pawel Blaszczak, Giles Lamb
Today I’m presenting three covers for the Dead Island score by Pawel Blaszczak – and Giles Lamb, who created that haunting tune for the legendary teaser trailer of the game. I decided to give them both credit for the soundtrack, since most people associate Giles Lamb’s theme with the game. For the first cover (#1) I used the Blood Edition of the game, which was released a few months after the original game. It took me a while to find it in a high enough resolution. I also changed the game’s logo in the middle back to it’s original, because…
“Crysis 2” by Borislav Slavov, Tilman Sillescu, Hans Zimmer, Lorne Balfe
There have been four official soundtracks for Crysis 2, and every single one looked basically the same. And also, horrible. I felt they were all too cool, too bold and in your face. But since I – to my own surprise – enjoyed the musical score quite good (something I couldn’t tell about the game though), I needed an adequate soundtrack cover. For my first custom I wanted something less sensationalistic and more subtle, but at the same time in the spirit of the game. I came up with this simple discbox slider design (#1), that would make a good promotional item. Maybe…
“BioShock” & “BioShock 2” by Garry Schyman, Various Artists
When Garry Schyman’s score soundtrack to BioShock was released on the official website, I immediately started designing cover artworks for it. I especially like the first one (#1) with it’s 3D-like surface. It took me some attempts to match the credits font with the official logo, but I think it turned out pretty good. I also compiled a song album with the licensed vintage music from the past, so I had to make a second cover (#2) to go along with it. The same goes for BioShock 2 of course. I created an entirely new score album art from scratch (#3) and also slightly…
