I‘ve never been a big fan of Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and its musical score. I guess my expectations were just too high, since About Schmidt and especially Sideways are amongst my most favourite comedies. But as I was recently rewatching it, something changed. Dedicated to the memory of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman I would like to recognize one of his last, but probably best performances: his role as Lancester Dodd in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, once again scored by Jonny Greenwood. This was all done within one evening. The original artwork (#1) comes with an image of Joaquin Phoenix on its back side. With The Social Network Trent Reznor’s recent change of style culminated into an astonishing, Golden Globe- and Academy Award-winning musical composition. The chamber-music-like score to In Bruges grew on me over time until now, where it sits on top of my 2008 soundtrack list with a definite 10 out of 10.
