Dawn of the Dead by Tyler Bates was on my searchlist for a very long time. While the score on album isn’t quite the listening experience I wanted it to be, there were a few key sequences in the film, that captivated me on first sight – and still manage to do so. Custom covers for Cliff Martinez’ Contagion were an uncertainty for me for a long time. First and foremost, of course, because I really like the score with its vibrant, irresistibly propulsive tone. The razor-sharp, almost clinical-cold sound palette creates a very hopeless, merciless scenario in my head – which I like, oddly enough. The chamber-music-like score to In Bruges grew on me over time until now, where it sits on top of my 2008 soundtrack list with a definite 10 out of 10. Composer Carter Burwell will forever have a page in my book, despite his recent compositions which I’m not entirely keen at. But with scores like this one he hits just the right note.
