To mark the occasion of the recent release of Outcast – Remastered, I decided it’s finally time to take care of Lennie Moore’s 1999 masterpiece. His orchestral score was a pioneering one in many ways, paving the way to symphonic game scoring as we know it today. Generally one can say that a combination of the fonts “Slider” and “Grover” were used for all the album credits. Part three of my Jurassic Park series closes with Don Davis’ soundtrack album to the rather failed third film directed by Joe Johnston. At least the score gave us some lovely new themes and a few good atmosphere tracks. But all in all the whole affair was a bit lackluster. This has continued up to the soundtrack cover with its excessive use of a Pteranodon’s shadow. I mean, It’s totally okay to use shadows, but that top layer was far too heavy. One thing about The Lost World: Jurassic Park, which I became aware of only over the years is, that the film owes its dark atmosphere mainly to the score from John Williams. The style of the film, especially the color scheme, may seem a bit rougher than its predecessor, but it’s still a family friendly, highly successful summer blockbuster. It’s mainly thanks to Williams’ new musical motifs and themes, that we see unfold a significantly darker world before our eyes. As with many soundtrack fans in my age, my real, devotedly love for film music started with John Williams’ 1993 masterpiece Jurassic Park. The film reignited the blockbuster torch, that was lighted by Jaws eighteen years earlier. Therefore it was all the more appropriate for John Williams to revisit the style, that skyrocketed his career in the first place. The score to Jurassic Park bursts with lush thematic cues and swashbuckling action pieces. Williams beautifully captured the grandness and excitement, but also the danger of a theme park filled with dinosaurs. It’s definitely one of his finest moments to date…

My summer hiatus is over and I’m back with a brand new cover series for Gravity. The film was directed by Alfonso Cuarón, music composed by Steven Price.
