There was a time in the early 2000’s when I was particularly keen on Asian horror flicks. It all started with – I kid you not – a selfmade, unlabeled copy of Ju-On: The Grudge that a friend brought along. We’ve watched it late at night on my shitty telly, knowing nothing at all about it. And it totally caught us off guard and terrified us down to the bones. After that intense experience I craved for more. I’ve hunted down a whole bunch of films, such as the original Ringu, Uzumaki, Pulse (Kairo) or the episodic Three… Extremes. They were…

“Prometheus” by Marc Streitenfeld, Harry Gregson-Williams
My most wanted film of 2012 was Prometheus by Ridley Scott. Despite all its mind-boggling flaws, I still enjoyed the hell out of this movie. A thing that initially couldn’t be said about Marc Streitenfeld’s score though. While it’s still very effective and on certain tracks actually really good, it definitely fell behind the previous four scores of the Alien saga (yes, even Resurrection). Having said that, it kinda grew on me over time and I really appreciate the score now for being able to set the mood. Its atmospheric and unsettling sounds deserve recognition and what better way than…
“The Green Mile” by Thomas Newman
Next Sunday, when the annual Academy Awards will come to an end for the 89th time, it will also be the 14th time that Thomas Newman hasn’t won an Oscar. He got his first nomination in 1994, so this means in a period of twenty-three years, Newman was nominated on average every one and a half years. And he lost every. single. time. Keep that in mind when you feel sorry for yourself the next time. I wanted to post this set of The Green Mile in honor of a man who has composed some of the most beautiful, emotional and heartfelt…
“Cloverfield” by Michael Giacchino
There are two kinds of people: Those who leave a movie theater as soon as the credits start rolling and those who hold out until the very end, when the lights finally come back on. If you are part of the second group like me, you probably know of all the rewards you get if only you keep your ass seated as long as possible. Starting from the usual mid- and post-credits scene to animated end credits rolls and occasional outtakes. The most rewarding thing however might be those brief moments of tranquility, when you can just lean back and…
“Patriots Day” by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross
America, Fuck Yeah! – My immediate gut reaction when I saw the poster campaign for Peter Berg’s newest tearjearker Patriots Day. The previous films of this small-town Michael Bay haven’t exactly been known for their extraordinary thoughtfulness or depth. And I guess this one makes no difference, regardless of its (especially in this day and age) sensitive background story. I was even more surprised to see Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross attached to this film. Without judging Berg or his body of work, it seemed like an odd collaboration to me. But as stated in a recent interview, breaking new grounds was exactly their reason…
