Another year, another Oscar nomination for Thomas Newman – which must feel a bit like a bad joke for this accomplished composer by now. As mentioned in an earlier blog post for The Green Mile, Thomas Newman so far was nominated for an Oscar every 1.5 years on average – only to regularly lose out on the award ceremony. While many of these defeats may well be justified, there have also been some years in which he certainly deserved to take home the Oscar with him. American Beauty in 2000 or Road to Perdition in 2003 to name just a few….

Vinyl covers are one of my great passions and an important part of this blog. All of the following posts contain those self-made vintage artworks.
“Red Dead Redemption 2” by Woody Jackson, Daniel Lanois, Various Artists
After months and months working entirely on one single custom covers collection I’m finally done with Red Dead Redemption 2. Like every so often I didn’t plan to do an undertaking this big, but once things kick into gear there’s hardly anyone who’s going to stop me (obviously). But if there’s one single game in the last couple years that deserves this kind of dedication, it’s certainly RDR2. Rockstar Games have had hundreds of people developing this epic tale for seven years and you can see, hear and feel the results of these efforts in every single aspect of the…
“True Grit” by Carter Burwell
When I watched the Coen Brothers’ True Grit in cinema I was kinda underwhelmed. I found it to be too tedious and I quickly dismissed it for not having enough drama or tension. It was only recently that I finally figured out what a stupid dickhead I was. True Grit is not about retelling an oh-so-clever plot, something I am unintentionally hoping for in every new Coen Bros film ever since I saw Fargo (the most twisted tall tale ever!). It’s a simple campfire story with a down-to-earth reality to it, depicting the journey of three disparate human beings, each…
“The Homesman” by Marco Beltrami
When tackling modern western soundtracks The Homesman certainly shouldn’t be missed. After all it’s one of the most beautiful and heartfelt scores Marco Beltrami has ever written, and it’s backing up a small, independent film that’s not to be missed either. The Homesman tells the story of a frontier farm woman (Hilary Swank) who saves the life of a claim-jumper (Tommy Lee Jones) and persuades him to help her escort three insane women to a safe haven in Iowa. (synchrotones.com) It’s not exactly a thick plot, but The Homesman could perfectly be converted into a Red Dead Redemption II questline. First…
“28 Days Later” & “28 Weeks Later” by John Murphy, Various Artists
It’s always the same… Right after I complete a gargantuan project, which keep me busy for weeks and sometimes even months, I feel spent and empty. But not very long. Quite early that feeling begins to shift into something else. Then I often times sit and skim through all my unfinished custom covers series and get all giddy and enthusiastic. Like a starving predator I roam my sprawling list of ongoing projects and look for that one single collection that is most likely fit for an early release. I guess I just love publishing stuff on this blog right here. It’s…
