“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” by Michael Giacchino

These last couple of weeks I’ve come to see more and more covers of mine being posted on social media – and more importantly – by composers and producers themselves. I didn’t realize that until now. And I immediately thought of all those rants and perhaps unjustified criticism that I’ve posted over the years. Sometimes I forget that composers (and maybe even studios…..) are real people too and they pour their heart and soul into their work. And we, the fans, just can’t stop moaning and nagging about everything. So I want to take this opportunity to say sorry to…

Lost Covers, Vol. 5

This years entry of our ongoing series “Lost Covers” contains a wide array of different works. Like its predecessors, most covers in here showcase all kinds of failures and *whatcangowrongs* in cover design. But there also are little gemstones like my contract work for Gwenaël Mario Grisi, a rising Belgian composer whose overnight(!) composition Through the Clouds definitely was one of the most beautiful tracks I’ve heard in 2017. Also, Gwenaël has his own IMdb page, so he’s officially my new best friend ;) The overall amount of commissioned covers is unusually high this time. Not royalty-based though, only voluntary…

“Blade Runner 2049” by Benjamin Wallfisch, Hans Zimmer

There’s a lot to love about Blade Runner 2049, whether it’s the faithful continuation of the story from original pen Hampton Fancher or the stunningly beautiful cinematography from camera virtuoso Roger Deakins. A lot of things that deserve to be praised. Unfortunately the films marketing campaign ain’t one of them. And it’s a real shame, because, considering its poor box office performance, this film really could have used some catchy and favourable media coverage. Instead we got this trite orange & teal trivialities that look nothing like Denis Villeneuve’s dark nuanced neo-noir thriller. Not like the barren wastelands and certainly…

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” by John Williams

Almost exactly two years ago I was just about to finish what would become HQCovers‘ most successful blog entry so far: Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was a massive undertaking, at least from my perspective. Twenty (quite complicated) custom covers and related in-depth liner notes. All in all it took me about eight weeks, which is quite a lot compared to other entrys on this site. That’s why I decided that this year I’ll make it fast and easy. And by fast and easy I mean that I re-used most of my old templates and knocked out this entire collection over…

“Stranger Things: Season Two” by Kyle Dixon, Michael Stein, Various Artists

If you’re following my facebook channel you may have already seen a lot of these covers. It was at the end of August when Netflix began to put out weekly Stranger Things tribute posters, each one resembling a famous movie from the past. Back then I was working on a new, massive sci-fi project and I felt a little exhausted designing inserts, back covers and disc labels. Any distraction felt like a welcome change. So I began to turn those posters into square album covers, if only to take a little breath. Though I didn’t realize the new heights this…
