“Alien³” by Elliot Goldenthal

Alien³ by Elliot Goldenthal might be my favourite Alien score out of them all. It’s just so dark and menacing, it’s a real beast, unleashed by its composer. I think out of all the Alien films, this is the one that benefits the most from its soundtrack. Right from the opening logos (“20th Century Fox Fanfare“) we know we’re in trouble. Why would anyone want to do covers for an apparently nonexistant soundtrack album? Well… First and foremost, because Alien Isolation is just one fucking awesome video game! I don’t play far as much as I used to, but Isolation is so immersive, it managed to keep me glued to the screen until four o’clock in the morning. It’s that gripping and tense! No matter what, the graphics, the sound design or the overall programming, it’s brilliant in every aspect. Another reason may be that there is indeed an inofficial bootleg album floating out there… and thus there may very well be demand…

Ever since Brick I’m a Rian Johnson fan. I was delighted to see him being catapulted into Hollywood’s writer/director A-list with the success of his Sci-Fi-Brainer Looper. I think the film is a classic grower, that gets better and better with every viewing. Oddly enough, as often as I have seen it already, I’ve never really noticed Nathan Johnson’s score for it. After all the success Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had with their past efforts, it’s really interesting to hear only Ross’ side of the coin. To be able to go back to a time before the duo started collaborating on soundtracks. It strikes me that recently I started to work more and more on covers for scores that I either haven’t listened to yet or from the start am not interested in listening to at all. The Rover falls in the first of these two categories. I’m already looking forward to the film and really hope that the musical soundtrack by Anthony Partos keeps what the stunning looking cinematography is promising. A Nick Cave and Warren Ellis vibe definitely comes to mind, and dear me that’s a very good sign! The original artwork wasn’t that visually compelling, so I felt called upon to do something….
