“Kong: Skull Island” by Henry Jackman

For the most part I was pretty underwhelmed by Kong: Skull Island. Instead of being entertained by an adventurous thrill ride I was irritated by a whole lot of problems. The “plot” is an absolute joke. Pacing is all over the place. The characters are your usual stereotypes… and even the monster fights can’t stand a chance against Peter Jackson’s King Kong from 2005. It seems like there’s not much left to like about this film. Certainly not Henry Jackman’s mediocre score. Okay, maybe the atmospheric cinematography by Larry Fong. And a particularly nice typography during the film’s opening and closing credits. But there’s…

“The Green Mile” by Thomas Newman

Next Sunday, when the annual Academy Awards will come to an end for the 89th time, it will also be the 14th time that Thomas Newman hasn’t won an Oscar. He got his first nomination in 1994, so this means in a period of twenty-three years, Newman was nominated on average every one and a half years. And he lost every. single. time. Keep that in mind when you feel sorry for yourself the next time. I wanted to post this set of The Green Mile in honor of a man who has composed some of the most beautiful, emotional and heartfelt…

“Cloverfield” by Michael Giacchino

There are two kinds of people: Those who leave a movie theater as soon as the credits start rolling and those who hold out until the very end, when the lights finally come back on. If you are part of the second group like me, you probably know of all the rewards you get if only you keep your ass seated as long as possible. Starting from the usual mid- and post-credits scene to animated end credits rolls and occasional outtakes. The most rewarding thing however might be those brief moments of tranquility, when you can just lean back and…

“Arrival” by Jóhann Jóhannsson

[This entry is brought to you by the wondrous magic of Adobe Photoshop] When I first laid eyes upon the set of teaser posters for Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi brainer Arrival I was immediately struck in awe. It happens rarely that I fall in love with a film poster at first sight, but I just lost myself in those amazing still-lives with their gorgeous colours and lighting. So much so that I could even ignore some of the choppy Photoshop actions in there. Furthermore BLT Communications, widely regarded as a leading player in the business, got into hot water with a…

“Stranger Things” by Kyle Dixon, Michael Stein, Various Artists

Netflix’s Stranger Things is without a doubt this summer’s biggest TV sensation. No wonder the clamour for its original score was loud among fans. And the producers did answer in form of a massive 75-tracks-set, divided into two separate albums. Show ’em all you’ve got instead of setting a few specific marks, that probably was the motto behind those two releases. And while I do appreciate complete and expanded scores a lot, I’m a bit overwhelmed by that huge amount of music. But who am I to judge? I actually started working on this custom covers series before the official…
