“Rogue One – A Star Wars Story (Deluxe Edition)” by Michael Giacchino, John Williams

December… it’s that time of the year again. When hundreds of thousands of people cheerfully maintain their religious traditions. And children of all ages desperately wait for that one single night. The whole world is collectively going nuts over the annual celebrations that start to feel just like the years before. In short: It’s Star Wars time. I did not really want to treat Michael Giacchino’s Rogue One here, or for that matter Disney’s entire A Star Wars Story anthology series, mainly because I was afraid that it would make me suffer from Star Wars fatigue pretty soon. And that’s something I…

Lost Covers, Vol. 4

Man, has it really been this long already? Last week HQCovers has officially turned five. By now it has learned to write its own name and has become extremely picky when it comes to dress up in the morning. Also, its extended warranty has now expired, so your chance to file a complaint is officially over ;-) I deliberately didn’t parade this anniversary, because this blog is essentially the digital extension of my own self and thus doesn’t like to stand in the spotlight. Instead I once again let the art speak for itself. I’m actually publishing Vol. 4 of this ongoing thing,…

“Star Wars – The Ralph McQuarrie Series” by John Williams

Looking through this site’s past few months, I felt like like there’ve been enough Star Wars posts already. But my Skandinavian pal tintacle proved me wrong by making one of the most remarkable custom covers series I’ve seen in recent times. His collection is a striking demonstration of how Ralph McQuarrie was not simply a production illustrator on Star Wars. He was more of a translator of George Lucas’ phantasies, bringing a whole galaxy far, far away to life. When looking at one of his drawings, it is as if you’re looking at a history book. They’re full of depth and lore and…

Lost Covers, Vol. 3

The unwanted brainchilds, the dispassionate requests, the okay’ish ones I guess and the late comers. Also the lone wolves that’d definitely deserve a single post but somehow didn’t end up in one. They all suffer the same fate: Being dumped into this consolation prize of a blog entry, without the chance of ever being the single featured image on the front page. For the third time now. I should rename this series into The Good, the Bad and the Tragically Misjudged. But Lost Covers rolls off the tongue more elegantly. Though not everything’s lost on these to be honest. This time I’ve included two covers, that rightfully deserve a gallery…

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Deluxe Edition)” by John Williams

A few weeks ago my dear friend SonicAdventure approached me for a really special collaboration project. A Deluxe Edition of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, containing music from both the official soundtrack and the “For Your Consideration” promo album that was published by Disney during the awards season. Sonic did all the audio wizardry (editing, mixing, mastering), while I was free to do anything with my custom cover art. And it was an absolute blast (as John Williams would call it), by far the most joyful cover making experience I’ve had so far. Naturally for this fan-release I revisited my initial custom…
