Have you ever heard about You and the Night? An independently produced “sex comedy” from French filmmaker Yann Gonzalez, brother and ex-bandmate of M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez. Chances are good, that you haven’t. And no-one is to blame you, for this is really an obscure, little film. But – let me tell you that: its score is absolutely beautiful! Vanilla Sky might be one of my favourite Cameron Crowe films, although it’s an almost frame by frame remake (or in the words of the director, cover) of Pedro Almodovar’s Open Your Eyes. Crowe even cast the same lead actress for it. But he created such a stylistic and well-directed film, that you can sense his love for the original material in every scene. HQCovers recently surpassed 100,000 views and I thought I’d take this opportunity to have a little resume and see where I’m from, where I’m at and where I’m going. The Past I started creating soundtrack covers in 2006 after I bought the iPod Video, the first one to handle cover artworks. Ever since Brick I’m a Rian Johnson fan. I was delighted to see him being catapulted into Hollywood’s writer/director A-list with the success of his Sci-Fi-Brainer Looper. I think the film is a classic grower, that gets better and better with every viewing. Oddly enough, as often as I have seen it already, I’ve never really noticed Nathan Johnson’s score for it. I love the fact that James Newton Howard can write scores like Maleficent and Nightcrawler within the same year. Compare the lush and romantic beauty of the former with the strange yet oddly efficient combination of electronica and woodwinds of the latter and you couldn’t go further apart.
