I recently took a few quick shots at Mychael Danna’s 2011 score to Moneyball. That score grew on me over the years and I really enjoy it nowadays; the same goes for the film as well. Even though the soundtracks’ only proper release was as a CD-R on demand version by Madison Gate Records, I still wanted to offer a few custom covers for it. Once again my love for minimalism shows as both custom covers are basically texture artworks, instead of the official soundtrack sleeve (#3) which prominently features the lead actor. My first attempt (#1) came together rather…
Category: Vinyl Covers
Vinyl covers are one of my great passions and an important part of this blog. All of the following posts contain those self-made vintage artworks.
“Nebraska” by Mark Orton
Dear readers, I’m pleased to announce that HQCovers is now accessible through its own domain http://www.hqcovers.net. I’ve already owned this domain years ago and finally was able to purchase it again. Thus, all my ancient links in various message boards are with one blow active again, which is awesome :) I thought I seize the opportunity and go full social too with a newly formed facebook group. So if you’re part of the crowd, consider yourself invited to follow me over there. To celebrate this occasion, I want to post a very special gem here for you. A score that…
“The Abyss” by Alan Silvestri
I always have loved the art direction and style of James Cameron’s films and of course their musical counterparts. And The Abyss by Alan Silvestri makes no exception. Varese Sarabande Records carefully recycled the official artwork for their recent release of the Deluxe Edition (#1). I was never a big fan of the sparse score by Silvestri, but I took this opportunity to finish up a few design sketches that were sitting on my shelf for a while now. The first cover I wanna share some thoughts upon is an exact replica of the 1998 Japanese CD Edition by Volcano (#3). I was looking for a…
“Gravity” by Steven Price
My summer hiatus is over and I’m back with a brand new cover series for Gravity. The film was directed by Alfonso Cuarón, music composed by Steven Price. I have listened to the score already and was pretty impressed at how Price managed to capture the vast emptiness and especially silence of space, but more importantly the tension of being up there. And I’m not exactly talking about the story-related events happening in the movie, but the distressing thought of what it would be like floating around alone in this cold, black and ultimately lethal void. As usual in an…
“I Am Legend” by James Newton Howard
With recently releases The Last of Us and World War Z, I was once again in my annual zombie fever. So I thought, it was the perfect time to make a few covers for one of my all-time favourite James Newton Howard scores: I Am Legend. The 2007 film, directed by Francis Lawrence, wasn’t received that well by critics, but I fell for it immediately. I’m a sucker for apocalypse movies/books/games in general. And the mature approach on such serious topics like loss, lonelyness and guilt was a game-changer for me. Although there’s a huge amount of silence in the…
